OMAHA, Neb. -- Think your mail is safe at the curb? Thieves are stealing mail from curbside mailboxes in two Omaha neighborhoods, according to the U.S. Postal Inspector. Neighborhoods near 168th and Center streets and 90th and Dodge streets have been targeted.
"Your mail is not safe anymore," said one victim, who did not want her identity revealed. Two days ago, the woman watched out her window as a car drove up the street.
"I thought perhaps they were dropping off information about a yard service or cleaning, like that," the woman said. Instead, she watched as the men took her mail out of her mailbox, including a check to her credit card company. The Postal Inspector said there's a name for this type of crime."There's even a term in drug communities called 'red flagging,'" said Perry Mitchell, at the U.S. Postal Inspector's Office. "They say, 'Lets get mailboxes -- the red flag. Drive around and look for red flags up.'"Mitchell has pages of complaints from just the last few days.To prevent the thefts:
