OMAHA, Neb. -- West Omaha is in the middle of a construction boom.
The intersection of 168th Street and West Dodge Road is a focal point. A new shopping area is nearly complete and it goes beyond the typical mall to what developers call a "lifestyle center."When it is complete, it may remind visitors of a shopping area in Dundee or Old Market. The developer plans to make the area a destination point and bring people in from a 100-mile radius.
All told, 60 restaurants and stores will open in the complex."It certainly has the outdoor, main street feel," said Steve Jensen, with the Omaha Planning Department. "They have seating areas, water features, outside fireplaces are proposed."The term lifestyle center refers to an area that encompasses many different interests including entertainment, shopping and dining."You can go to a restaurant, put your name in for a seat, take a beeper and do your shopping and when your table is ready they can beep you," said Scott Brown, with Quantum Development, one of the partners building the new center."It's a whole different type of growth," said Rob Luellen, with Quantum Development. "There's a crowd that's been begging for this type of retail in this town."Similar projects are also being developed, including a project at 178th Street and West Maple Road.Retailers Joining 168th and West Dodge Complex:
