OMAHA, Neb. -- Nebraska and Iowa do not have a law like some states that provide special Halloween rules for convicted child molesters. Texas, New York, California and Virginia have laws that don't allow sex offenders to answer the door, hand out candy or even decorate.
There are more than 50 registered child sex offenders living in the Omaha area. The Nebraska State Patrol said sex offenders have a high risk to re-offend.
"I wouldn't let my guard down just because its a holiday," said Sgt. Todd Kinghorn with the State Patrol, who works with the sex offender registry. "Nebraska doesn't put any restrictions, per se, on who they can live with and where they can live, unless something is ordered by the court," Kinghorn said.
Advice from the State Patrol for parents this Halloween includes; only go to homes of people you know, if you do go to other homes, always have a parent walk to the door with the child and keep an open line of communication so if something does happen, you'll know about it.
You can find registered sex offenders on the Nebraska State Patrol Web site.
