UPDATED: 7:05 a.m. CDT June 6, 2003

The search for a Plattsmouth boy missing since January has been delayed.

Five cadaver dog teams and personnel from several police agencies had planned to comb a landfill Friday to search for evidence in the case of Brendan Gonzalez.

Cass County Attorney Nathan Cox said in a release Thursday night that Plattsmouth Police Chief Brian Paulsen reported there were mechanical problems at the landfill and the search would be delayed until Monday.

Teams plan to dig out a section of the landfill called phase seven. Officials said the area is the size of 6.5 football fields.

Experts are helping investigators narrow their search down even further to concentrate on an area measuring 75 feet by 125 feet.

Bellevue police are searching the landfill following a new lead in the case of missing 4-year-old Brendan Gonzalez. Brendan Gonzalez

Tuesday, an apartment resident told police he or she might have seen a body being put into a trash dumpster on the day Brendan disappeared. Police said Ivan Henk, Brendan's father, told them he put Brendan's body in a dumpster at the R Apartment complex in Bellevue near Offutt Air Force Base.

Bellevue police and Plattsmouth police searched the dumpster for evidence, before turning it over to the Douglas County forensic lab for more testing.

Bellevue Police Chief Hines Smith said the dumpster has been emptied several times since then at the Sarpy County landfill.

Bellevue Police Capt. Herb Evers said Wednesday that plans were finalized to search the Sarpy County landfill after Plattsmouth police and the Douglas County Crime Lab found blood and hair in the trash bin.

Evers said he has not heard if confirmation has been made on whether the blood or hair matched that of the boy.

Evers said his department has been asked to assist with manpower in the search of the landfill. He said cadaver dogs from Des Moines also are being brought in to assist in the search.

Henk said in court that he had killed Brendan, who's been missing since Jan. 6.
