The governor handed out Medals of Valor to emergency workers and citizens from across the state. Among them, a Glenwood police officer Gary Chambers, who was involved in a shooting.

Chambers was responding to a call in April.

"Imagine the terror in the middle of the night, receiving a call, not knowing what you're going to find," Vilsack said.

What Chambers and Mills County deputy Eugene Goos found was a man shooting at them.

"It takes a special person to be prepared for that kind of moment," Vilsack said. Deputy Goos was shot in the hand and shoulder. Officer Chamber then had to deal with the situation on his own.

"Somehow through the great deal of bravery and guts Gary was able to arrest the suspect without injury to any civilians," Vilsack said.

"I'm just one piece of a big puzzle, all deputies, troopers, city officers, throughout the state they do the same thing I do," Deputy Goos said.

Family and friends traveled to Des Moines with Chambers and Goos for the ceremony.

The suspect, who allegedly shot Goos, Drew Young, goes on trial in January. He's facing three charges of attempted murder.

Other Honors:

  • Firefighters Jason Strubbe and Brent Eshuis who got valor awards for rescuing 4-year-old Zach Van Den Top when the family's Rock Valley home caught fire on April 26.
  • Chris Crutchfield, a Story City volunteer firefighter, who received a valor award for saving the victims of a fiery crash in October of last year in Ames.
  • Carroll firefighters Jeff Mohr and Mike Staiert who got the Governor's Commendation Certificates for removing an unconscious woman from a fire after a shootout with a man and the woman on Jan. 25 in Carroll.
