Johanns (pictured, right) said he was pleased by the results of the election. His campaign managers said they were happy the margin of victory was wider than earlier polls suggested.

Meanwhile, challenger Stormy Dean said he had no regrets about the race. He said he knew he faced a strong incumbent, but he said his discussions and participation in the race were needed to make the democratic process work.

2nd Congressional District

Republican Lee Terry retained his seat as well. Terry told KETV NewsWatch 7 that the numbers from the election show Nebraska voters approve of the job he has been doing. He said the House of Representatives has passed several bills, including plans for prescriptions and a comprehensive energy policy, but those have been stalled in the Senate.

His challenger, Jim Simon, said running a race against an incumbent was incredibly difficult. He said fund-raising was critical to the campaign. He thanked everyone who helped his campaign.

Douglas County Sheriff

Douglas County Sheriff, incumbent Tim Dunning will spend another four years leading the department. He credited a great team for his victory. He said he will continue addressing public safety, especially following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Sam Christiansen, who was also running for Douglas County sheriff, said part of his loss was due to the fact that not enough Democrats voted in this year's general election.

OPS Tax Levy Override

Leaders in the Omaha Public School District said they were disappointed that a plan to override the state's tax levy was rejected by voters. They said the extra money was needed to improve education for Omaha's children.

Opponents of the plan were happy that the OPS tax levy measure, and several other tax initiatives were defeated in Tuesday's election.
