Closing Arguments To Begin Wednesday In Bormann Trial

Jurors Finish Watching Lengthy Interrogation Tape Tuesday

The defense has rested in the Kyle Bormann trial after a jury heard the remainder of a police interview tape in which detectives questioned Bormann after the shooting.

Both sides are preparing their closing arguments, which will take place Wednesday morning.

Crucial to the first-degree murder accusation is what Bormann said after the shooting.

The prosecution argued that Bormann targeted Brittany Williams because she was black.

But detectives testified that they found no evidence of racial prejudice in Bormann's homes in Omaha or South Dakota.

Bormann was a student at South Dakota State University before coming to Omaha.

Further, Bormann's alleged racial comments after being arrested are under scrutiny. The officer who reported them did not write down the comments and couldn't remember the comments word-for-word.

During the recorded interview, Bormann repeatedly tells the detective that he doesn't hate black people.

"They're great people," Bormann said on the tape. "They're nothing different from you or me."

Bormann said he never wanted to shoot anybody in his life, though he acknowledged during the recorded interview that he liked to shoot animals.

When a detective asked about Bormann aiming his rifle at a fast-food drive-through sign, Bormann said, "I remember seeing the KFC in my sight. I remember seeing a vehicle pull up. I remember shooting the gun."

When pressed about why he fired the shot, Bormann repeatedly replied that he didn't know. He never acknowledged seeing Brittany Williams through the scope mounted on his rifle.

Investigators said Monday that the scope was found to be at eight times magnification -- its highest setting -- when it was recovered.

When left alone in the interrogation room during the interview, Bormann is heard repeating, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry."
