There is growing concern about the number of young adults with sexually transmitted diseases in Douglas County.

County health department Dr. Adi Pour called the rise in STD rates an epidemic.

According to the date, more than 2,700 people between the ages of 15 and 24 were treated for Chlamydia last year. That’s 62 percent above the national average.

Health agents said that more people are getting tested and treated but doctors said that it’s not enough.

“We have a real crisis here and it's embarrassing and we need to do a more aggressive approach to do more about it,” Charles Drew Health Center CEO Dr. Richard Brown said.

Community leaders are trying to come up with a broader plan to warn about the dangers of unprotected sex.
