Pottawattamie Co. Won't Pursue Legal Action Against Casino

The Pottawattamie County Board voted unanimously Wednesday morning not to pursue legal action in the proposed Indian casino in Carter Lake, Iowa.

Pottawattamie County Attorney Matt Wilbur said the county's concerns will be addressed in a state lawsuit.

Several groups were opposed to the casino, including the attorney generals for Nebraska and Iowa, both governors and the Omaha City Council.

However, Carter Lake City Coucil favors it.

Ponca Tribe chairman Larry Wright Jr. said many people are missing the aim of the casino, which is to build the economic self-sufficiency of the tribe, he said.

Wright said the casino will benefit the economic vitality of western Iowa, not threaten it.

He said 1,800 jobs will be created as a result of the casino and 3 million people would visit each year.

The tribe said it's committed to making the necessary investments to ensure Carter Lake's infrastructure.
