Millard South Suspends Another Student For T-Shirt Tribute

School Says Shirt Violates Dress Code Policy

UPDATED: 4:48 pm CDT September 2, 2008

A student at Millard South High School was suspended Tuesday for wearing a T-shirt in tribute to a classmate who died in a shooting.

That's down from 18 students who were suspended Friday for wearing similar shirts.

The school reported that many of those students are serving their one-day suspension Tuesday. Others face a three-day suspension for their second offense.

The students are expected to return to class later this week.

The Nebraska chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union got involved on the students' behalf Friday and demanded that the suspensions be dismissed.

The ACLU said the shirts are not disruptive to learning and are a way for students to express grief.

School officials said the shirts violated district dress policy.
