OMAHA, Neb. -- Some fast drivers found out Thursday that participating in a cross-country road race on public highways does not exempt them from speed laws.

State troopers clocked a 2008 BMW-M Series at 120 mph on Interstate 80 near Mahoney Park.

The driver, 21-year-old Ian James, was headed to Las Vegas, the endpoint of the 2008 AKA rally that started in New York on Monday.

He was charged with speeding and willful reckless driving. Instead of Las Vegas, he went to the Sarpy County jail.

Another driver in a BMW-M Series was pulled over for speeding in a construction zone on I-80 near the airport interchange in Lancaster County Thursday.

The driver was issued a $294 ticket and released.

Both were racing to Las Vegas.

"Races of this kind are extremely dangerous. Whenever you mix high speeds, with the kind of traffic volume we have on the interstate, you are just asking for something bad to happen," said state patrol field services Capt. Rod Getting.
