Injured Officer Indentified: Paul Latschar

An Omaha police officer who was shot in the stomach and arm during a traffic stop Wednesday night is still in critical but stable condition at Creighton University Medical Center, said Omaha police.

After the shooting, the officer's family members, other officers and Mayor Mike Fahey arrived at the hospital.

The officer has been identified as Paul Latschar, an 8-year veteran with the department.

In 2002, KETV NewsWatch 7 interviewed Latschar after he and another officer were injured on the job.

They were hospitalized when they inhaled anhydrous ammonia from a methamphetamine lab following a traffic stop on Highway 75.

Latschar was one of four people recognized as "officers of the month" last December.

Police are not releasing any more information until Chief Eric Buske holds a press conference at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

One resident witnessed the aftermath when rescue crews arrived.

"His head was on the concrete and his body was in the street," said Anastasia Scott. "They sat him up, the ambulance, they came and they put him here, they took all the stuff off him and put him back in the truck."

Another resident, Avis Linstrom, said he also heard the shots.

"All the police cars were flying, coming in from every direction," he said.

One suspct has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting, which happened near 42nd Street and Camden Avenue at 10:48 p.m. Wednesday.

"Everybody started getting in their car and running down the street. I guess they chased them, because they got the dogs out," Scott said.

Police said Latschar is a veteran and a member of the Gang Unit.

He and another officer were making a traffic stop when a someone in the vehicle opened fire.

One of the officers returned fire but the shooter was not wounded.

Police blocked off several streets near 42nd Street and Camden Avenue as the investigation took place.
