OMAHA, Neb. -- A veteran Omaha Police officer was upgraded to "critical, but stable" condition after being rushed to the hospital in "extremely critical condition" early Thursday from gunshot wounds suffered during a traffic stop near 42nd and Camden Avenue.Paul Latschar, an 8-year veteran with the force, was shot by a suspect around 10:48 p.m. Wednesday.Post your thoughts and feelings about the shooting and leave messages here for officer Latschar and his family
Police say Corey T. Allen, 30, is under arrest in connection with the shooting. he was caught after running from the scene of the shooting. It's believed there was only one suspect, and a firearm was recovered.Omaha Lieutenant Darci Tierney declined to describe the nature of the Latschar's injuries, but sources told KETV NewsWatch 7 he was wounded in the abdomen and arm, and lost a considerable amount of blood.Omaha Police said Latschar is a member of the Gang Unit. He, and another OPD officer were making a traffic stop, when Allen opened fire as the officers got out of their vehicle.One of the two officers returned fire, but Allen was not wounded.Latschar was taken to Creighton University Medical Center where his family members, the Mayor, and police officers gathered after the shooting took place.Omaha Police blocked several streets near 42nd and Camden as the investigation took place. One resident of the area said police initially would not allow him to leave his home.
