Douglas County authorities have charged a man with a sexual assault that left an 11-year-old girl pregnant.

A.J. Kelly was picked up by the fugitive task force Thursday morning at a residence near 45th and Corby streets in Omaha.

“Kelly is charged with first-degree sexual assault on a child,” said Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine. He said the girl was 11 years old when Kelly raped her and made her pregnant sometime between August and October of 2007.

The girl went to a hospital with abdominal pains in April, and doctors delivered her stillborn baby.

“We did DNA tests from that birth and were able to confirm he was the father of that child,” said Kleine. “Scientific evidence led us to that child.”

Police said Kelly has a history of assault, domestic violence and false imprisonment.

The details of the story don’t shock child psychologist Dr. Cynthia Topf. She’s dealt with children in the same situation during her 20-year career.

“I think they’re the tough ones,” she said.

Topf uses dolls and toys to talk to children who’ve been through horrendous abuse. She said there are emotional consequences for children who are impregnated from a rape.

“She might act out, being promiscuous, (or have) a larger propensity to do drugs or alcohol to get rid of those feelings,” she said.

Topf said those children may withdraw or feel guilty about the crime.

“Your body can respond when your mind doesn’t want to. That’s really hard for a 10- or 11-year-old,” she said. “A girl has to regain that specialness of her own body because it’s been taken away from her.”

Topf said intense therapy and a lot of support can help these children put the abuse behind them.

“A lot of victims become good advocates and good helpers,” she said.

Kelly’s alleged victim is now 12 years old. She and her five brothers and sisters are all in foster care.
