OMAHA, Neb. -- A family is spending more time together being active since they joined the KETV Family Fitness Challenge at the holidays.

The Chavez-Birmingham family has cut down on fast-food stops and beefed up the time they spend at the YMCA.

Sons Julio and Alex spent a lot of time at the Y during the challenge, as did their parents, Terri and Jose, but their challenge was more about the little things. They walk or bicycle to the grocery store instead of driving.

In the kitchen, the family is making healthier choices, too. They said they choose skim milk, cut down on soda and use light mayonnaise on wheat bread for sandwiches.

Working at a restaurant made it tough for Jose Chavez to stay with the program, he said, but packing a homemade lunch or dinner and cutting way back on the soda helped him keep up with the rest of the family.

"This really get me back on track to what I used to be 15 years ago," he said. "It was a good challenge."

All four family members said that the end of the challenge is really just the beginning. They plan to maintain the discipline and make healthier choices in the future.
