Omaha Names Finalists For Fire, Police Chief Candidates

Omaha's search for chiefs of police and fire has been narrowed to a short list of finalists.

The city said in a Thursday news release that the Human Resources Department has provided Mayor Mike Fahey with the list.

Omaha Police Chief Thomas Warren retired in January within weeks of Fire Chief Robert Dahlquist's decision to retire.

The finalists for Omaha police chief are:


Deputy Chief David Baker: Baker is a 21-year veteran of the Omaha Police Department, having held his current position since January. Baker has an associate's degree in political science and electronic engineering, a bachelor's degree in criminal justice administration and is in the process of obtaining his master's degree in management.

Interim Chief Eric Buske: Buske is a 23-year veteran of the Omaha Police Department, having served as deputy police chief since November 2003 and interim chief since January. Buske has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and a master's degree in public administration.

Deputy Chief Pitmon Foxall: Foxall is a 24-year veteran of the Omaha Police Department, having held his current position since January 2006. Foxall has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice.

Deputy Chief Mark Sundermeier: Sundermeier is a 24-year veteran of the Omaha Police Department, having held his current position since January 2006. Sundermeier has a bachelor's degree in sociology and a graduate certificate in police executive leadership training.

The finalists for Omaha fire chief are:


Acting Assistant Chief Joseph Fuxa: Fuxa is a 25-year veteran of the Omaha Fire Department, having served as battalion chief since January 1999 and acting assistant chief since September 2007. Fuxa has an associate's degree in fire prevention technology and a bachelor's degree in management.

Assistant Chief Perry Guido: Guido is a 25-year veteran of the Omaha Fire Department, having held his current position since October 2007. Guido has an associate's degree in fire protection technology.

Acting Assistant Chief Anthony Lang: Lang is a 23-year veteran of the Omaha Fire Department, having served as battalion chief since June 2006 and acting assistant chief since December 2007. Lang has a paramedic's license, bachelor's and master's degrees in management, and a master's degree in business management.

Interim Chief Michael McDonnell: McDonnell is an 18-year veteran of the Omaha Fire Department, having served as assistant fire chief since June 2007 and interim chief since December 2007. McDonnell has an associate's degree in fire technology and a bachelor's degree in criminal justice.

Fahey will now conduct interviews with each of the finalists and make a selection, and that should be completed in the next several weeks.
