OMAHA, Neb. -- Families are just now getting settled back into their homes after the mandatory evacuation Wednesday night in South Omaha. The order was lifted just before 5 a.m. Thursday.A hydrochloric acid leak forced many people from their homes around the area of 13th Street corridor between I Street and Mid-city Avenue.
One of those families was the Greenlee family.Irene Greenlee was on her way back home Wednesday night when she saw barricades and police officers. The officers let her through so she could grab her daughter and her medication."So I grabbed what I could. I forgot about the medication because I was being rushed," Greenlee said.A faulty valve on a Burlington Northern railroad car caused the leak, which spewed more than 150 gallons of the toxic chemical. The Greenlees are happy to be back in their home, despite any odor."I'm hoping the stuff we have in the house is going to help," she said. "I have two air purifiers."
