OMAHA, Neb. -- A crowd turned out to greet the Salvation Army's mobile pantry on Tuesday morning.

People began lining up at 8 a.m. to make sure they could get food and household items as rising prices squeeze many low-income families.

Elvesa Anderson was one of over 300 people lined up outside the Salvation Army North Corps location waiting for shampoo, over-the-counter medicines and snack items. An official said many of the people lined up mid-month are trying to make ends meet between biweekly paychecks.

When the truck arrived, a prayer was said and then people moved through the line. William Rivera made sure to let the workers know how he felt.

"This means so much," he said. "You don't know how much it means because, you know, the economy now, these days, everything is going so high and stuff. I just thank God for the Salvation Army, that they're helping here."

Betty Cottrell and her son, Jackson, lined up. Jackson Cottrell is attending the University of Nebraska-Omaha and Betty Cottrell said she is unemployed.

"With the gas prices rising, so do the food prices, so that when the gas goes up, that makes it even harder for us to pay for the gas and food, especially with the limited amount of money and food stamps we have," Betty Cottrell said. "It takes a lot of worry off of me to be able to have stuff we need for out hygiene, as well as food, and I appreciate it."

This was the second month that the mobile pantry was at North Corps and there are more dates set on June 24, July 22, Aug. 19 and Sept. 23.
