COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa -- A three-car accident in the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 shut down the interstate for nearly an hour over the lunch hour.

Police said a car having mechanical issues near the river and stopped in a lane of traffic. That's when a second vehicle changing lanes slammed into the stopped car. A third car then hit the second and spun out and hit a guard rail blocking traffic.

A dog in one of the vehicles died in the crash.

Two people were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Traffic was also extremely slow in the eastbound lanes from the 13th Street exit, across the river, and eased up after the accident scene.
