OMAHA, Neb. -- Fourteen million Americans can't see clearly, that's one in 20.On Tuesday, the University of Nebraska Medical Center unveiled a special place for them, the new Weigel Williamson Center for Visual Rehabilitation.More than a dozen people helped cut the ribbon at the new vision center.
It's set up like a house, not a clinic. That's so people with visual impairments can have hands-on training for real life situations.Kay Konz has lived with retinitis pigmentosa for more than 20 years. She's legally blind.Konz said, “People think that blind means no vision. I expect to have some vision for most of the rest of my life. There are lots of things they can help me do that I couldn't figure out on my own. so I'm very excited about this.”Konz said the center will help her figure out how to cook safely, organize her home and cope with her changing vision needs. The $1.2 million center is named for its donors, Dr. Harry and Beth Weigel and Omahans Alice and Robert Williamson.
