An Omaha grocery store chain presented a check for almost $27,000 on Tuesday morning to a fund intended to help victims of December's mall shootings.

Bag 'N Save said the money for the Von Maur Victims Fund came from customers who donated it at check-out for three weeks following the shooting. The money will go to help survivors and victims' families.

Eight people were slain and four others were wounded after Robert Hawkins, 19, opened fire inside the Von Maur store at Westroads Mall in December. Hawkins also killed himself.

On Monday morning, committee Chairman John Ewing said most of the money will be placed in trust funds for education scholarships for minor children and long-term health care needs of victims. The rest of the money will be paid in lump sums directly to families. Ewing said $280,000 will go to victims with long term health care needs and $263,000 for educational scholarships.
