OMAHA, Neb. -- A cornerstone of campus fundraising has been abolished at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

Bake sales have been banned on campus. Citing health and safety concerns, school officials said they had to make the move.

"There have been incidents in the past several years -- and some recent incidents, not here on campus, but in nearby areas -- about food contamination," said UNO risk manager Bill Swanson.

Some students haven't reacted well to the decision, saying the university took things too far.

"It is stupidity at its finest," said freshman Kacee Kremeier, who belongs to two students groups that had planned bake sales this semester. "Most of the money we were raising was going to a low-income school to buy books for them."

Junior Frank Likely said the ban doesn't bother him.

"I don't buy baked items anyway and maybe they should be banned," Likely said.

"I think that should be left up to students," said sophomore Sonja Lapuzza. "It's their right. They pay to go here. The school shouldn't step in and make that decision."

Administrators acknowledged that students may think the ban is unfair, but they said they want to be proactive.

"Everybody's going to feel, perhaps, that their rights have been violated, but we feel there was enough information floating around that, perhaps, we ought to take a look at this," Swanson said.

School officials said they plan to help any student organizations that need fundraising alternatives.

The three other University of Nebraska campuses have reviewed their bake sale policies, and administrators said that the Medical Center and Kearney will also have some restrictions. Lincoln is the only campus that will not make any changes.
